Afghanistan's controversial fast bowler, Naveen ul Haq, has been handed a 20-month ban by the International League T20. The ban resulted from his violation of an agreement with the Sharjah Warriors franchise.
Initially, Naveen signed up with the team for the inaugural edition held in 2023. However, when the Warriors offered him a one-year extension for the 2024 season, he declined to sign the retention notice.
This refusal prompted the Warriors to seek intervention from the league. The ILT20 initiated a mediation process through an independent third-party mediator in an attempt to find a resolution. Unfortunately, this effort proved unsuccessful.
The ILT20's Disciplinary Committee, consisting of three members, including league CEO David White, Security and Anti-Corruption Head Col. Azam, and Emirates Cricket Board Member Zayed Abbas, individually listened to both parties and, after examining the evidence, reached a final decision.
CEO of DP World ILT20, David White, expressed regret in making the announcement, emphasizing the importance of all parties adhering to their contractual commitments to avoid harm to the other party. He stated, "Unfortunately, Naveen-ul-Haq failed to fulfill his contractual obligations with the Sharjah Warriors, leading the league to impose a 20-month ban on him. The disciplinary proceedings were conducted transparently, providing both parties with opportunities to prepare and present their submissions."
Naveen-ul-Haq has been a controversial figure, notably engaging in a confrontation with Virat Kohli during a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants. The disagreement continued to the post-game handshakes, where exchanged words led to a heated moment, resulting in Naveen refusing the handshake angrily.
However, the tension between them was resolved during India's match against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup. Naveen initiated a reconciliation, and the two players shared a friendly gesture, starting with a handshake, followed by a pat on the back, concluding with a shared smile.
